The Many Deaths of the Black Company

...he had continued working on that spear secretly, always improving it, making it ever more his masterwork.

An enchanted spear was created by the minor wizard One-Eye of the Black Company during the Siege of Dejagore and improved upon for years afterward. Both its wooden shaft and its metal blade were black. The entire spear was covered in silver runes, gold inlays, and inscriptions of an unknown alphabet. Its true power was the ability to pierce sorcerous defenses. The spear was imbued with spells and was designed to kill sorcerers and magical beasts. One-Eye drunkenly called the weapon a "Shadowmaster blaster" and years later Croaker once referred to it as Godslayer.

Bleak Seasons[]

One-Eye first created the spear for the purpose of assassinating Shadowspinner during the notorious Siege of Dejagore.

During the siege, One-Eye discussed his weapon as follows:

Loftus shoots, this stick won't be in the air five seconds. That's all the time he'll have to figure out what's coming and what to do to unravel the spells that are there to keep him from turning it. Most of the spells are designed to penetrate his personal protection, counting on him not having time to do anything actively. Because I wanted to concentrate on piercing one point in a passive . . .

The spear was launched from a ballista by Loftus from the walls of the city at Spinner. But the shot missed, and the weapon instead passed through the shoulder of Shadowspinner's mount, one of the famous black stallions, instead of its rider. Although a normal horse would have perished in moments, the sorcery in the magically-bred stallion's bones conflicted with the spells from the spear, causing it to die an agonizing death from a wound that "glowed red, flickered" and spread across its flesh. It wound up in One-Eye's possession afterward.

She Is the Darkness[]

For more than a decade after Dejagore, One-Eye continually layered the spear with increasingly powerful spells and a fortune's worth of gold and silver inlays. In She Is the Darkness, Murgen recovered the spear and Croaker's black bow from his old, reinforced dugout outside Overlook where One-Eye had hidden it.

Soldiers Live[]

The weapon played a crucial role in at least two combat situations involving Croaker not long after One-Eye's own death in Soldiers Live. It was used to gravely injure and finally kill Lisa Daele Bowalk, and later, was used by Goblin in his final attack upon the goddess Kina. Despite being caught in the enormous explosion caused by the demise of Kina, the magical spear was only slightly twisted. Croaker noted that One-Eye must have layered powerful protective spells on the weapon. Croaker retrieved the spear before exiting the chamber.
